[There's a small "heh" under his breath as she humors his joke, but a part of him knows there WILL be a time where he won't be getting much sleep in the future. Dandy's seen enough movies to know babies are just nighttime noise machines.
No, it's the second thing she says that makes him pull back, although he still keeps arms around her.]
What, you thought I'd freak out about- [wait.] Yo, how long did you know about this?
[That is, of course, a lie, but Dandy has always had a pretty good system when it came to lying to himself. He throws his hands behind his head now as he lies back onto the floor of the Aloha Oe, looking up at the painted ceiling like it's the night sky itself.]
You know me, baby, I like to roll with what gets thrown my way, live with the flow. What's there even to be scared about? Babies happen, like, all the time, right?
[The future freaks him out, but Dandy figures he has time to get over it. ...As long as mermaids are the same as humans when it comes to this shit...]
[Maya's quiet for a few moments, searching for her answer. There's a lot of reasons why she's scared, but not one she can easily form words around, despite having ruminated that whole week over them.]
I guess... I didn't think this was how it would happen. I knew I'd have to have a kid someday, but- like, an heir.
[It's good that he can make her laugh at a time like this, and Dandy can't help but smile to himself when she hits his legs. When in doubt, smother your stress with humor.]
Good lookin' face, too. Fantastic bod... It's not fair. I dunno if the world is ready for someone that gorgeous.
[Adds Maya, though strikingly less frightened than her earlier such comments and much more wonder-filled. She leans back against the platform with him again, looking at the painted cieling as though she can see the inside of her imagination through it, images of dark mermaid hair and bright smiles hidden past the art.]
I never even thought about it before... Our kids.
[Theirs. Gross. And only slightly untrue; sure, she's thought about him with kids. She just never connected it as far as his-and-her kid, or really her involvement at all. Especially not when she still feels like a kid herself sometimes.]
[At least she thought about it a little, Dandy's thoughts couldn't have been farther from the idea. Back in the day, it'd just be one of those things that meant less freedom, one of those horrible things he lived his whole life trying to avoid. One of those...responsibility things.
But that was a long time ago. A part of him is even surprised just how nonearth-shattering this sounds anymore. Maybe this is what growing up is...]
Hey now, it's just kid. You make it sound like you're gonna have a litter.
[But that's a silly idea even for monsters, she's fairly confident, so she's totally not adding it to the scary list of possibilities.
On the contrast to Dandy, the responsibility of Pearl had been a freedom for Maya- maybe in other ways, the prospect of a baby offered new freedoms too, the biggest being one more excuse to actually enjoy parts of her life here. That didn't mean her obligation to produce heirs was completely gone from her mind, though, and children-plural still presented itself as more of an obligation than just a possibility.
After her laugh she grows a little sheepish about being called on it, toying with her hair and rolling her eyes.]
I just meant I didn't think about it that much, that's all.

Not like, a long time! Like a week? Almost a week. Like, for sure.
[her browspots knit in thought, suddenly, and she averts her eyes like she's reading something on the back of her mind.]
I guess I kinda figured before then, but I was like, that'd be weird, huh? Like, this kind of thing didn't happen for a while so--
[She gestures... Uselessly with her hands, trying to convey her confusion, but her nerves are written in the awkward stretch of her mouth.]

[Almost a week, but still! He'd like a LITTLE more credit than that. Yeesh...]
How'd you not go crazy?

[maybe she was just so worried he'd freak out because she wanted to. She doesn't know how to convey that, though.]
Aren't you scared, like, at all?
[She's not the only one, right?]

[This man is having a child.]

That's not what I meant!
[She protests, smacking his leg. But now that she's thinking about it-]
They're gonna have amazing hair. I know that already.

But they'd be pretty cool kids.
[Mermaids or not.]

I hope not!
