[Maya's been hiding a secret for a little while- a secret that's got her in a bit of a pickle. The kind of pickle that has her up again and thinking in the night, sitting on the entry ledge of the open side door of the Aloha Oe and staring at the moon.
It was just another reminder how stuck they were here that other monsters had reproduced, and it'd been more than a year since anyone had gone and disappeared. Though the fog drew in newcomers, nobody truly left these days, and monsters had found their stride with humans and each other, to the contentment of the fog god. In some respect, maybe Maya should have expected something like this to happen to her by now-- but between still questioning her own maturity and the built-in worries of her past, springing into monster motherhood wasn't really on her radar.
Now she faces reality under the low moonlight, illuminated mostly by her own glowing patterning. She knows, now, that she's pregnant, and it's brought all sorts of thoughts to the surface. Thoughts of her birthright and duty to her clan, thoughts of her beloved Pearl, of the things that are probably better off without her, she assumes. She thinks of the kind of relationships that life promised her, of men who loved briefly and left, of children who might one day grow to hate each other for the sake of an heirdom. She thinks of Dandy, who she knows is probably wondering where she is, who doesn't know all the thoughts in her head or even why she's been off lately, even if he's noticed.
Maya has to tell him. She can't just not tell him, even if the anxiety of having to do so is making her nauseous. (Her least favorite part of this whole endeavor.) Maya's got plenty of other reasons to be scared but right now the ones that itch the most are the fears she'll be alone through any part of this-- now, when she's gotten to like having Dandy around. There was a time when in preparation for what she thought would happen, Maya might be able to pretend it wouldn't bother her if he up and left-- but that time was long gone, and she's quite aware she'd miss him sorely.
All the same, the little light of hope that's always been in her hasn't been fully dampened by Ryslig just yet. There's a change that things might work out, whatever working out may be, in a world with completely different rules. There's a chance things won't be terrible. There's a chance Dandy won't run off.
And, should Dandy go out in the middle of the night to figure out why his girlfriend is out humming to the moon instead of cuddling him, there's a chance Maya won't bite her tongue.]
[Dandy always knew there would come a day when he'd finally stop travelling and actually settle, he just never thought that day would be forced on him. Living in Ryslig was the kind of eyeopener he never wanted, the kind that told him he can't actually do whatever the hell he wants, no matter how many times he got away with it in the past. The never ending anger and frustration he put towards trying to leave has finally simmered into a reluctant acceptance, and Dandy's decided to put his energy into looking at the positives.
Like how as far as being stuck on a planet where people are turned into horrible monsters goes, becoming a mermaid is definitely not a bad thing. Dandy loved being a mermaid and he's given up trying to figure out if that's how he really felt or if that's just the transformation talking. "Dandy is always Dandy" Maya would tell him, so if he's still Dandy while thinking these things, then they have to be his thoughts. ...Right?
That was the thing though, Maya herself was pretty much the selling point of Ryslig. Who would have thought that after all his years of travel, it was getting stranded on a planet that made him find someone who truly loved him for who he was. A part of it might have to do with the fact that he actually had to stay on the planet and therefore had more time to do things like...get to know people, but really what were the odds someone he'd connect with so well would just so happen to get dragged here too? The fear that she might possibly leave him for someone else never crossed his mind, not after all the times she stuck with him after things would go to shit, or he'd be stuck as a giant monster, or whatever Ryslig wanted to throw something at them. It really seemed like she was in it for the long haul.
Which is probably why when he finally notices she isn't in bed with him, he isn't all too worried. A very sleepy Dandy rolls from the comfort of his blankets and makes a very lazy march around the house to see if he can find her.
No? Not here. Midnight walks are cool. If she didn't glow in the dark, he might've missed her completely and chalked it up to some sort of nighttime dip in the lake, but nah. There she is, just chilling in his van.
Dandy doesn't bother to dress himself up just to go meet her outside, it's a waste of effort, he's got pants and that's the best he can do. ...He's also got a pillow, which he playfully throws at her when he finally reaches her.]
What, I wasn't invited to the sleepover? It's my damn bus...
[His own glow is pretty hard to miss, so he's hoping he didn't spook her while assaulting her so viciously.]
[The pillow gets Maya right in the face, and when it falls into her waiting hands it reveals a sly smile. It's harder and harder to be nervous with Dandy, even when worry clings to the back of her throat.
Dandy hasn't let her down, after all.]
I figured you'd find your way here. [read: she'd hoped.]
Aaaactually, I'm glad you came out.
[Hugging the pillow to her chest and rendering any supportive use of it... Useless, Maya lays back on the platform, legs still hanging over the edge. In the shadow of the otherwise dark van, the glow on her cheeks only seems brighter.]
[The way she catches it with her face only confirms her skills as a true pillow warrior, and Dandy can only fall more in love.
Absolutely making himself at home - again, it IS his van - Dandy casually sits himself next to her, nearly throwing himself there just to make a show of it. He smirks back at her, glad to see she looks okay, like she didn't come out here just to have a secret cry or something.
...Not that there was anything wrong with that, either, but he definitely prefers the chiller atmosphere.]
I'll have you know I am incredibly exhausted.
[But the look on his face says he'll fight through it if that's what she wants. Surely an experienced hunter such as himself can tough it out~]
[She doesn't sound too convinced, giggling to herself- a helpful tactic in avoiding her own nerves. She hasn't even thought about how she's going to inform him. Maybe she should just save it for another night! Maybe she can avoid it all with snarky comments and sleep deprivation!
...but that hasn't worked so far, so Maya steels herself, squeezing that pillow tight. She looks at Dandy and the parts of his skin that glow like hers, admiring them, and adds-]
I just- needed to tell you something.
[And now she's doomed herself; he'll never sleep until he knows what it is.]
She sure has a weird way of doing that, he thinks as he cocks an eyebrow at her. Did she just...assume he'd notice she disappeared into the night or something? What if he really did sleep all night, would she have told him in the morning or just wait until he noticed the next time she decided she needed a little late night bus time?
It must not be very important if she's willing to gamble like that, he grins when he begins to suspect it must be something sweet and innocent, that she loooooves him or something. Hehe, well two can play that game.]
That right? Well what a coincidence, I think I got somethin' I need to tell you, too. [Ever so gently, he stretches out one of his webbed hands out towards her, tenderly brushing away any hair that might've gotten in her face thanks to his pillow attack. There, now he can see both of her adorable little cheek spots, a part of him hopes they'll glow pink after he gets all mushy on her.] You go first.
[Maya's not expecting the reaction she gets, the curious and sweet way Dandy smiles and leans over. He's clueless. He has no idea. Maya's grip on the pillow tightens when he draws close, and she still gets a few butterflies watching how tenderly Dandy moves.
(She really would have waited, too, until a better moment, had he not come out. Let herself become more and more complacent until she had to tell him. But this opportunity...)
But god he realky has no clue, apparent in his prompting, like he's sure this isn't something as earth-moving as Maya feels it might be. And maybe it isn't that big a deal, maybe it is just a part of normal life now, but Maya can't help but stare at Dandy's grin from where she lays still.
'You go first.' Fine.]
I'm pregnant.
[She states simply, big black eyes blinking up at him, shining in the light of her cheeks. Well, if he's going to have a bad reaction, she'll get it over with. And if his reaction is at least any bit entertaining, she... Kind of feels proud of her timing. Not that she'll mention that part out loud.]
[Dandy nods a few times, his grin getting wider, as if he knew that was exactly what she was going to say. Confidently, he runs his hand through the strands of his long mermaid hair.]
No it wasn't! Dandy nearly stumbles out of the bus despite sitting, completely thrown off by what feels like a massive curveball. D-Did she just say what he thinks she just said?
The fins behind his ears start to raise up and down, like they're the physical representation of the gears in his brain desperately trying to turn. It's true, monsters have been starting to reproduce lately, but he's been so used to hearing how they can't, that the idea of it happening to them didn't even cross his mind. He was never careful, and now...]
You're pregnant?
[He has to say it out loud again, as if to confirm that it's real.]
[Ah, and as expected, Dandy's reaction is comical. It's also completely understandable, and rather than laugh, Maya finds herself shimmying that pillow up slowly over her face.]
Yes? Yes.
[Comes Maya's half-muffled answer. She'd been unsure for a little while, but the reality of it has set in whether she wants to admit it or not. They hadn't been careful, but Maya'd been operating on much the same thought (or lack thereof), so she understands his... Everything. She hadn't been much more composed than him, after all.]
[There are a whole mess of thoughts swimming inside his head once reality makes itself clear.
Yes? Yes.
She almost sounds uneasy, did she... not want to be pregnant? It's difficult to read, she keeps hiding her face and it's dark enough as it is. Hell, he can barely come to terms with his own feelings until something finally forces its way out of his dumbfounded mouth.]
I'm gonna be a dad.
[He emphasizes the him part, even pointing to himself as if the idea of SPACE DANDY being a father is ridiculous. Him. King manbaby. A father.
At the same time...he doesn't look upset. Surprised, of course, but there's almost a sparkle in his eyes...
Or his face is just glowing more than usual, it's difficult to tell in the dead of night.]
[Maya, in all her hesitance, can still hear the sort wistful wonder on the tone of Dandy's voice. She sits up, pillow hugged back to her stomach as she leans foward to get a better look at Dandy's face.
He is partially responsible for this. The dad is him.]
That's cool, right?
[Maya asks as she sits up.]
You'd be pretty good at it, I think? If you wanted to.
[Well, she's sure he'd be great at it, even if he didn't want to. Even if their child is some kind of terrible fog demon. She really hopes that isn't the case. ...but even if her baby is perfect, she's not sure she'd blame Dandy if he wasn't ready for this. It sure has come out of nowhere for her, but... So have most things, lately.]
Incidentally, that was his biggest worry, but hearing Maya say otherwise is...kinda comforting? Reassuring? He won't deny it, he's a mess, and most people would shutter at the fact that he finally spawned, but, like, fuck those guys? Sure, it's still scary as all hell, and this all feels like it's happening way too fast, but maybe this isn't...the worst?
As much as he loves to go on about how much he hates kids, his actions always proved otherwise. They were easy to impress, so it made showing them new things a blast. Convincing them he was cool was always way easier too, and many didn't question his stories. They'd just look at him in awe, and his ego loved it. It's just that he always had the added bonus of not having to deal with them 24/7. Kids definitely ain't angels all the time, and a brat throwing a tantrum's annoying regardless who made them. Still...if the kid's his own, that meant he didn't have to worry about anyone else putting stupid thoughts in their heads, like the monster kids he got to know in his early Ryslig days. If anyone tried to pull anything, it'd give him an excuse to punch someone in the face...
...He loves punching people in the face.
Dandy's expression softens when he finally pulls his thoughts together and looks at Maya, really looks at her because holy shit, this is the woman that's having his baby. HIS baby. Their baby. Is she lying- Why would she lie about something as serious as that? She wouldn't, not Maya.
It's real.]
Wow... I'm really gonna be a dad...
[Sorry Maya, he'd have a real answer, but his brain's still playing catch up. The hand that so confidently swiped his hair before now slowly reaches up and cradles his head, like if he didn't, it might fall off from all the extra weight all these sudden thoughts are giving him.]
[Well, it's not the worst thought he could be stuck on.
She keeps studying his face, the slack of his jaw, and once again her concern moves away from herself. Maya offers half a smile, leaning over more to get a better look of him, and asks--]
You gonna be okay, big guy?
[She tries to make light of it, but isn't really sure what she'll do if he like, keels over, or anything.]
[Oh, good, Maya moves close enough where his arms can simply snake around her, grappling her so he can pull her in even closer than she probably planned, giving him a great chance to just bury his face into her shoulder.
God, he's so tired...]
No clue. I mean, how am I supposed to sleep knowing this baby's gonna be prettier than me...
[Maya clicks a few half-offended squeaks as she's pulled off course and into Dandy's arms. She breathes out slowly in his embrace, laughing a little bit at his comment.]
You'll never sleep again.
[She hopes he's right. Maybe the fog isn't always cruel. Maybe this is good. Either way--]
[There's a small "heh" under his breath as she humors his joke, but a part of him knows there WILL be a time where he won't be getting much sleep in the future. Dandy's seen enough movies to know babies are just nighttime noise machines.
No, it's the second thing she says that makes him pull back, although he still keeps arms around her.]
What, you thought I'd freak out about- [wait.] Yo, how long did you know about this?
[That is, of course, a lie, but Dandy has always had a pretty good system when it came to lying to himself. He throws his hands behind his head now as he lies back onto the floor of the Aloha Oe, looking up at the painted ceiling like it's the night sky itself.]
You know me, baby, I like to roll with what gets thrown my way, live with the flow. What's there even to be scared about? Babies happen, like, all the time, right?
[The future freaks him out, but Dandy figures he has time to get over it. ...As long as mermaids are the same as humans when it comes to this shit...]
[Maya's quiet for a few moments, searching for her answer. There's a lot of reasons why she's scared, but not one she can easily form words around, despite having ruminated that whole week over them.]
I guess... I didn't think this was how it would happen. I knew I'd have to have a kid someday, but- like, an heir.
